- Boil the water and make sure that the temperature is 195-205 degrees Fahrenheit. You can use a thermometer to check that the temperature is right before you continue brewing the coffee. If you do not have one, you can boil the water, remove it from the stove, and wait for 30 seconds before brewing your coffee.
- Measure the coffee. You must get the right ratio of water to coffee to make a perfect cup of coffee. Important note: Use 18 grams of water for every 1 gram of coffee to get the perfect coffee taste every time. The more coffee that you use for brewing, the more flavor it will have.
- Rinse the coffee filter. This step is important so that the coffee will not taste of paper. You can avoid the paper taste by not forgetting to rinse the paper filter. Rinse the filter for 5 seconds.
- Grind the coffee beans. Grinding the coffee beans before brewing will allow you to have control over the flavor of the coffee. If you will use a fine grind, it will bring more flavor, but can make your coffee a bit bitter. A coarser coffee grind will give you a sweeter version but can be slightly acidic and might taste weak. - Pour hot water. You must do it in two parts. Bloom and brew time.
For the coffee to bloom, pour a small amount of water (at least 30 grams) over the coffee grounds and let it soak for 30 seconds. The blooming part will remove the carbon dioxide from the coffee. During this time, the coffee grounds will expand, rise, and bubble. If you forget to bloom the coffee, the carbon dioxide will not allow the water to fully penetrate the coffee, which can affect the result of the brewing process.
Brew time: You must pour the rest of the hot water over the coffee grounds according to the specified ratio. Pour first at the center and do it in a spiral direction to evenly soak all the coffee grounds. Enjoy the cup of coffee, but don’t forget to clean the brewing equipment.

How to Use the French Press
- Preheat the French Press. You perform this step so that it will not affect the brewing temperature by using a cold French press. Just use hot water and swirl it around until you feel that it is warm to the touch.
- Measure the coffee/water. When preparing coffee, you should make sure to get the ratio right. Use a weighing scale to get the right amount of coffee grinds and water. You can estimate one part of coffee for every fifteen parts of water to start. Make sure to weigh your water as well so that you can get the same results every time. The water temperature must be 195-205 Fahrenheit. You can use a gooseneck or stovetop kettle to boil the water.
- Add coffee grounds and hot water. Add the right amount of coffee grounds to the preheated French press and add hot water. Use a small spoon to stir the coffee mix so that the coffee grounds will be fully drenched with the hot water.
- Cover the French press with the lid and start the timer. Placing the lid back will help maintain the temperature as the coffee continuously brews. Set the timer; the standard steep time is around 4 minutes, but you can adjust it according to your taste preference for your coffee.
- Press the plunger. After the steep time is done, slowly press the plunger downwards. Make sure to press it down fully because if you do not do this properly, then your coffee will continue to brew, which can cause over-extraction. Finer coffee grounds can cause resistance when you press down the plunger, while too coarse grounds, on the other hand, will not have enough resistance.
- Decant the coffee. Decanting is recommended because the longer the coffee stays in the French press, the more flavor will be incorporated into it. Over-extracted coffee will not taste good and can be quite bitter.
- Enjoy the coffee. Serve it in a cup. You can add sugar cubes and milk according to your preference.
